ABOUT

This is the first film we made for the Central Intelligence Bureau of Taiwan, and it is loosely based on the case of Lisa Lines, an Australian teacher who was convicted over the attempted murder of her husband and who then spent close to four years living undetected in Taiwan before anyone caught up with her. The story picks her up at the very end of that run, on the day she tried to leave the island for Palau, a departure that Taiwanese intelligence work made sure she never completed, and the sequences documented in this episode are the ones in which she collects her child from school on the way to the airport.

Part two of the official behind the scenes series stays with those school gate scenes, which read as completely ordinary on screen and take the better part of a day to build, because a working school and a live public street have to be turned into a controlled set without ever looking like one. The episode follows the camera department through that process on Blackmagic bodies and Cooke glass, from the first walk through with the director to the last handheld pass before the light went, and it gives a fair sense of how much rehearsal, resetting and plain waiting sits behind a sequence that lasts under a minute in the finished film.

If you have ever wondered what it actually takes to shoot a commercial at this scale, the honest answer is somewhere in here between the lighting resets and the quiet arguments about where to put the camera, and we left all of it in rather than cutting the day into something more flattering than it really was.
